Chess for Life/ Grades K-5

Who should attend:

Any student interested in learning or increasing his or her knowledge of chess.

Material covered:

Principles of chess, both basic and advanced, for players of all levels.

Principal Instructors:

Experienced Chess4Life chess coaches. All of the coaches work closely with National Master Elliott Neff and follow the Chess4Life curriculum designed by Elliott.

Chess study has shown to:

-Increase math skills, memory, and self confidence
-Improve patience, concentration, and sportsmanship


 

Coding with Kids / Grades 2-5

Time: 10 Monday's 3:45pm to 4:45pm

Location: Ms. Vigna Classroom B104 Students will meet at the outdoor picnic area at 3:30pm for snack first

GAME DEVELOPMENT / BEGINNER-INTERMEDIATE

Do you play games and wonder how they are created? Would you like to build your own computer programs? Come learn how at the Coding with Kids Academy! In this fun after-school class, BEGINNERS will be introduced to the core concepts of computer programming, including loops, conditionals and variables. INTERMEDIATE students will move on to more advanced concepts, such as nested conditionals and functions with parameters. Using the Scratch development environment, you will learn how to create a variety of programs, from simple animations to multi-level games. With new projects each session, you will be able to express your creativity and advance as a coder!


 

Young Rembrandts Drawing Class/ Grades K-5

Time: 10 Monday's ; 3;45pm to 4:45pm

Location: Mrs. Jones Classroom B103 - Students will meet outside at outdoor picnic area at 3:30pm for snack first.

Experience the colorful magic of fall with Young Rembrandts drawing classes. Kick off the season with a graphic iguana, a video game favorite Pixel Block Character, and the geometrical world of architecture as we draw the Notre Dame Cathedral. Later, students will immerse themselves in the seasonal spirit as they learn still life technique with a composition featuring a colorful pumpkin vine. As we draw these and other subjects we will improve creative and critical thinking skills -- in addition to having a whole lot of fun!

At Sponge, we see language as a passport to global citizenship. Students learn to see the

world through a different lens while acquiring language skills and the confidence to use them.

Young learners are especially primed for language learning - research shows that students are 70% more likely to gain fluency when they begin in elementary school or younger.

We are pleased to offer this class at Benjamin Franklin elementary this season!

Final Projects:

Introducing final projects for each unit! Each project uses a fun cultural theme to incorporate and reinforce language learned in the unit.

The Jumpin’ J’s are bringing their jump rope program to Ben Franklin Elementary on Tuesday's, STARTING October 4, 2016 

The Jumpin’ J’s, comprised of current and former members of the world-champion Hot Dog USA jump rope team will be conducting a 10-week session of PTSA-sponsored after school jump rope classes beginning Tuesday, October 4. (No class on 10/18.) These classes are customized for children in grades 1–5. Students will be taught single rope and partner jumping, double dutch and more.
